How to Buy a SaaS Product Without Guessing

A practical guide to reviewing source code, dependencies, operating costs and handover before buying a SaaS product.

Buying a SaaS product is different from buying a screenshot. Start by identifying exactly what transfers: source code, domain, brand files, documentation, infrastructure configuration and third-party accounts.

Review the product boundary

Ask which features work in the delivered code and which depend on external providers. Payments, email, AI, maps, bank data and app-store accounts normally require separate contracts. A clear listing should distinguish the product from those services.

Inspect the technical package

Confirm the framework versions, database, deployment process, environment variables, background jobs, storage and backup needs. If your team cannot inspect the repository before purchase, require a structured technical walkthrough and a written inclusion list.

Plan the first ninety days

Budget for branding, hosting, legal documents, security maintenance, provider fees and the first market-specific features. Source code shortens development, but operating a reliable SaaS still requires ownership and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying source code include the domain?

Only when the listing explicitly includes it. Source code, domains and third-party accounts should be itemised separately.

Should I ask for revenue proof?

Only if the seller claims existing revenue. A newly created software product should be assessed as a code and product asset, not as an operating business.
