NMFC freight class calculator for packaged density

Measure the handling unit as tendered, calculate cubic feet and pounds per cubic foot, and compare the result with the current standard density bands. This is a planning estimate—not an NMFTA item-number lookup.

Handling unit as tendered

Use the packaged outer dimensions. The density band is provisional and does not look up an NMFC item number.

Estimate first

Measure the shipment as it will travel

The dimensions that matter include the pallet, crate, wrap, or other protection that changes the handling unit. Enter the greatest straight-line dimensions and the tendered weight so the estimate reflects the shipment rather than an unpackaged product.

  • Use one row per handling unit when sizes or packaging differ.
  • The result is a density band for planning, not a confirmed commodity classification.
  • Mixed handling, stowability, liability, and item provisions can change the final class.
Carrier handoff

Leave the item-number decision visible

Export the assumptions with the density result and leave a blank field for the shipper or carrier to confirm the NMFC item number. That handoff is safer than turning a generic density table into a promise about an individual commodity.

  • Recheck the official NMFTA table when classification rules change.
  • Keep the source date with saved estimates.
  • Ask a freight specialist about unusual handling or liability characteristics.

Continue from calculation to workflow

Use the result as an input to planning—not as a standalone system decision.
