SaaS Churn Rate: Formulas, Cohorts, and Honest Benchmarks

TL;DR - Calculate SaaS churn rate correctly, distinguish customer from revenue churn, use cohorts, understand benchmark limits, and turn cancellations into useful product decisions.

SaaS churn measures what leaves a recurring customer base. The basic formulas look simple, but period choice, denominator, upgrades, pauses, reactivations, and customer segments can turn one “churn rate” into several different numbers. State the definition before comparing it.

Customer churn formula

For a defined period:

Customer churn rate = customers lost during the period ÷ customers active at the start of the period × 100.

If 200 customers are active at the start of a month and 8 cancel during that month, customer churn is 4 percent for that monthly cohort under this definition. New customers acquired during the month do not belong in the opening denominator.

Revenue churn formulas

Gross revenue churn = (churned recurring revenue + contraction) ÷ opening recurring revenue × 100.

Net revenue churn = (churned recurring revenue + contraction − expansion − reactivation) ÷ opening recurring revenue × 100.

Use parentheses around the numerator in a working model. If expansion exceeds loss, net revenue churn can be negative, which corresponds to net revenue retention above 100 percent.

A revenue bridge exposes each movement. One net percentage can otherwise hide who left and who expanded.

Use cohorts instead of one blended average

Group customers by start month, plan, segment, use case, geography, and acquisition channel where there is enough data. Measure whether each group remains active and how its revenue changes. This reveals whether a product improvement helped new customers while older customers behaved differently.

For annual contracts, monthly customer churn can be misleading because most customers cannot leave each month. Review renewal cohorts and state whether non-renewal is recorded at notice, contract end, or service termination.

Why benchmark comparisons go wrong

An “average SaaS churn rate” may combine consumer and enterprise products, monthly and annual contracts, logos and revenue, young and mature companies, voluntary and involuntary loss, or different observation periods. A monthly rate cannot be multiplied by twelve without considering compounding.

Use external benchmarks as context only when the source defines sample, date, segment, metric, and calculation. Compare your own cohorts over time first. Stripe’s SaaS revenue forecasting guide distinguishes customer churn from recurring revenue movement and treats churn as an input that compounds.

Separate voluntary and involuntary churn

Voluntary churn follows a cancellation or non-renewal decision. Involuntary churn can follow failed payments, expired cards, or a billing problem. Track them separately because the remedies differ. Improve payment recovery for involuntary loss; improve customer value, fit, onboarding, service, or pricing for voluntary loss.

Turn cancellation data into work

  1. Record the stated reason in the customer’s language.
  2. Attach plan, tenure, activity, support, channel, and revenue context.
  3. Review cancellations in a recurring cross-functional meeting.
  4. Choose one testable cause rather than a broad “retention initiative.”
  5. Measure the relevant cohort after enough time has passed.

Do not make cancellation deliberately difficult. A saved customer who remains frustrated is not healthy retention.

Buyer checks

Reconcile churn events to the customer list and recurring revenue schedule. Check whether paused, delinquent, discounted, or cancelled accounts are still counted. Examine the largest losses individually and look for cancellations delayed around a sale process.

Connect churn to the broader SaaS metric dictionary and the assumptions in the LTV and CAC calculation. A precise definition and a visible cohort are more useful than a benchmark presented without context.

Why this matters for Mauritius businesses

Mauritius is rolling out MRA e-invoicing in phases by taxpayer category. The timetable and status can change, and MRA may separately notify a taxpayer, so businesses should check the current MRA e-invoicing page and their own notices before acting on a deadline.

The Codeblix approach

Codeblix eInvoicing is MRA-listed as an EBS Solution Provider (SN 95, BRN C24214425). The system handles every aspect of MRA compliance automatically - real-time fiscalisation, IRN tracking, QR code generation, hash chain maintenance, and monthly transaction reporting. The local support team in Chamouny is available to help with any MRA query, audit, or transition question.

What to do next

If your present process does not support the fiscal-invoice requirements that apply to your business, document the gap and test an appropriate EBS workflow. Codeblix can review your business requirements and onboarding scope before preparing a proposal; regulatory conclusions remain with the taxpayer and its advisers.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate customer churn?

For a defined period, divide customers lost during the period by customers active at the start, then multiply by 100. State exclusions and avoid mixing new customers into the opening denominator.

What is a good SaaS churn rate?

It depends on segment, contract length, company stage, price, and whether you measure customers or revenue. Compare like with like and focus on the direction and causes in your own cohorts.
